Frequently Asked Questions About Drain Genie

The Drain GenieWill the Drain Genie fit any size vacuum hose?

The Drain Genie fits 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 1 7/8 vacuum hoses. If you have a different size vacuum hose, then an adapter will be required. Adapters for common vacuum hose sizes are available at your local hardware store.

Is a wet vacuum required for the Drain Genie or can I use any kind of vacuum?

A vacuum that can safely vacuum up water must be used. The Drain Genie unclogs the drain by pulling the water from the P-trap back to the vacuum. The water from the P-Trap carries the clog and other loose debris back to the sink and into the vacuum.

What if the Drain Genie doesn’t unclog the drain? There are a few things that you can check:

  • Make sure that the P-Trap is completely filled with water. The water should run for 20 to 30 seconds between attempts.
  • Make sure that the wet vacuum is a minimum of 2 hp.
  • Close drains in the nearby areas of the house. If you are using the Drain Genie on a bath tub, cover the vent hole with a wet towel or wash rag.
  • Make sure Drain Genie is getting a good seal around the drain.

Can I use the Drain Genie to recover valuables that fall into my drain?

Yes, the Drain Genie will help you recover almost anything that would fall into a drain, such as rings and other jewelry, coins, contact lenses and more. Place a nylon stocking over the end of your vacuum hose before you put the Drain Genie onto it and the nylon will catch any debris that you remove from the sink.

After I cleaned out my sink with the Drain Genie, there was a slight odor in the room what causes this?

The P Trap under your sink is designed to have a certain amount of water in it. The water acts as a barrier to prevent sewer gas from coming into your room. If you forget to run water into the sink after you clean out your drain you may notice this odor. To fix this simply, run some water into your sink. The P-Trap will automatically fill to the correct level and the odor will go away.
